Tom Jones (1963)
1st off, I must comment on the extremely shitty transfer of this movie onto DVD. I’ve seen ripped movies from some guy holding a video camera in the back of a movie theater with people’s heads in the way that had better film quality, color, and resolution than this movie did. Though afer watching the movie, I can understand why restoring it probably wasn’t high on the priority list.
The movie is about a young good-looking bastard (Tom Jones) frolicking around unable to keep his dick in his pants during 18th century England. His extreme inability to keep his pants buttoned of course means that wooing the love of his life (Sophie) runs into all sorts of snags. If all those sultry seductresses (i.e. the creepy dirty looking girl of ill-repute, the barmaid/inn lady who just might be his mother(!), the poor random wench who just happens to get her clothes torn off, etc, etc) would just stop getting in the way! Wow! I guess this movie really was made during the come-get-it-on-1960’s — or at least that’s what I gather the 60’s must have been like from this movie. Some parts of this movie totally remind me of a drugged out haze. For instance, there seems to be a lot of general frolicking in meadows and laughing at nothing really funny. Anyways, at best I’ll call this movie “fun”. At worst I wonder if 1963 was really that bad of a year for movies…
