Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space
Spiritualized – Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space
I really like the tone of the album; very laid back, almost sonambulent. I’m particularaly fond of “Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space” and the beeps and vocal samples. A very smooth track, and I can see why it’s called drug music… One problem with the disc is a relative lack of cohesion throughout, take “Come Together” which is quite a departure from “Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space,” not that it’s bad or anything. But definitely a departure. A lot more energy and drive, the electroinc polish is replaced by stronger vocals, harmonicas, horns and a much harder guitar. These get mixed better on later tracks (such as “Stay With Me”) with really nice effect.
Sprirtualized seems to be borrowing from a an amazing range of styles, I really didn’t expect the sure amount of instrumentation on their tracks (especially the horns and harmonicas). On this disc you your get mellow electronic tapestries AND your orgiastic guitar riffs. Not too mention some tracks (”Broken Heart”) that sound like they come out of some musical score… As for the vocals, well they remind me of the Beatles in their more pyschedelic moments (have to say the same thing for The Beta Band as well). I’m fairly pleased with the disc, though like The Three E.P.s by The Beta Band the individual tracks are hit and miss. I’ve yet to come across a really consistent trip-hop group in the vein of the Beta Band and Spiritualized, and I really wish I could.
