Thievery CorporationAbductions and Reconstructions

I got into Thievery Corporation (TC) after buying The Mirror Conspiracy mostly on a whim. I wasn’t a big fan at first, but the disc has really grown on me. I really like TC’s laid back beats and worldbeat overtones. Sorta acid-jazz meets disco meets trip-hop, but the tone of the disc is so consistant that I hardly notice the passage of each individual track. Moving now to Abductions and Reconstructions though… I REALLY dig the tracks, but as the Pitchfork review notes, the whole disc is just a little too much of the same thing. The same beats, the same percussion, the same speed… Taken in pieces I like the album almost as much as Mirror Conspiracy, yet it gets old. Still, it’s worth listening to if you like TC’s brand of laid back mixes. This is definitely chill music.

It is worth noting the TC mixes a rather bizaare spectrum of artists on the disc… Including alt rock’s David Byrne and senegalese singer Baaba Maal.

Favorite tracks: Dance On Vaseline, I Will Follow You (Souka Nayo), Tickertape Of The Unconscious, Pizzicato 5
