Free time is trending to 0 as the semester end looms. Realized yasterday that my final project presentation for my Information Interactions course is due a week earlier than was thought. Add this the Comp Sci presentation, Database lab, and Interface Design homework all due on Monday and Tuesday.

I feel this is ironic in some way. Last week I was helping panicked students submit their thesis to our new DSpace service. In the mean time I failed to note my own impending panic.

Oh well.

Things of note which deserve more attention and won’t get them:

Nana’s in Durham is wonderful (even if they got the bill wrong)
del.icio.us is all that and a bag of chips
Can’t wait to get ahold of The Confusion

Weblogs and information seeking behavior

Much to my surprise I find myself actually interested in my Information Retrieval paper topic… I’m writing about weblog specific IR systems like Feedster and how they compare to Google. I would really like to look more indepth into the information seeking behaviors that are common to weblogs, and to look more into how weblogs work as distributed tools.

Mingling

Justin notes that he was the only 2nd year SILS person at the sayonara to summer/aloha autumn party Marisa, Larissa, et al sponsored. I personally think mingling amongst the masses takes time… I know I wouldn’t know as many 2nd year SILS people as I do if I hadn’t taken Virtual Communities this semester or attended the Tarheel Bloggers meeting last month. Happy Hour is a good star towards encouraging intermingling, but I think more effort has to be made at such events to avoid having the attendees split into groups by year. Personally, I would love it if we made everyone introduce themselves at each Happy Hour since I’ve usually forgotten everyone’s name since the last one.

Where, oh where, are my GRE scores?

So I took the GRE (general) on October 10th. Stated time for the official score report to arrive is 12 to 15 days. I want my report dammit! Ok, I admit, it’s a bit early to get mad about the whole thing, but I really want to know how I did. When I saw my preliminary report upon finishing the test I must have gone into shock, because I’m convinced those scores couldn’t have been real.

For the record, I think I got a 720 verbal (which is good, but I did better on the practice test) and 780 quantitative (this is about 150 points higher than I got in the practice). If these are my real scores, I’m going to be ecstatic. If I did that well on the analytical section (stupid essays) I may have a heart attack.

Let me just say for anyone at the University of Colorado at Boulder who thinks that Computer Science Senior Projects isn’t a pain in the ass: You are wrong. Things I need to do this week:

Finish proof-reading 85 page design spec
Finish 1.5 hour 60 slide design presentation
Review for linguistics final (on friday)
Review for chinese final (on friday)
Finish and memorise chinese dialog (to be given thursday)
Sleep
