Spiritualized – Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space

I really like the tone of the album; very laid back, almost sonambulent. I’m particularaly fond of “Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space” and the beeps and vocal samples. A very smooth track, and I can see why it’s called drug music… One problem with the disc is a relative lack of cohesion throughout, take “Come Together” which is quite a departure from “Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space,” not that it’s bad or anything. But definitely a departure. A lot more energy and drive, the electroinc polish is replaced by stronger vocals, harmonicas, horns and a much harder guitar. These get mixed better on later tracks (such as “Stay With Me”) with really nice effect.

Sprirtualized seems to be borrowing from a an amazing range of styles, I really didn’t expect the sure amount of instrumentation on their tracks (especially the horns and harmonicas). On this disc you your get mellow electronic tapestries AND your orgiastic guitar riffs. Not too mention some tracks (”Broken Heart”) that sound like they come out of some musical score… As for the vocals, well they remind me of the Beatles in their more pyschedelic moments (have to say the same thing for The Beta Band as well). I’m fairly pleased with the disc, though like The Three E.P.s by The Beta Band the individual tracks are hit and miss. I’ve yet to come across a really consistent trip-hop group in the vein of the Beta Band and Spiritualized, and I really wish I could.

Favorite tracks: Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, Stay With Me, Broken Heart, Cop Shoot Cop

_ Tortoise – Millions Now Living Will Never Die_
A bit odd overall. Not a word anywhere. Very similar to the Ghost In The Shell Soundtrack. Very abstract, maybe too abstract, lots of bells and other noises with only slight electronic undertones. A little hard to place really… I’m fond of it but not blown away. I would really like to hear some of Tortoise’s newer music and see if that doesn’t appeal more. I like “Glass Museum” more than “Djed” mostly for the jazz influence and the guitar work, it has a lot more energy while keeping with the compositional theme of “Djed.” The same goes for “A Survey” which is really mellow but a lot more accessible than “Djed” I also like how the some blends so well in to “The Taut and Tame.” “Dear Grandma and Grandpa” is an interesting techno track that is kind of a departure from the earlier tracks, the samples work well, and add some needed texture. Earlier tracks are almost too smooth. “Along the Banks of Rivers” is a surprise because you hardly notice the transition from “Dear Grandma and Grandpa” until you hear a prominent guitar that sounds like it came out of John Barry’s 007 theme or some other 60’s soundtrack. The influences throughout the entire album are really interesting… Definitely jazz, some funk, electronica (though very mild, of the trance/ambient variety). Don’t know much about indie rock, but I’ve been told it’s definitely a key part of Tortoise’s music. It wouldn’t hurt to throw in some world beat too. Actually, I really wish the later tracks were longer, they really piqued my interest, but I really liked the cohesiveness of the album. In the end, I find myself very interested in listening to more of Tortoise’s work to see where they’ve taken their music in the last few years.

I got into Thievery Corporation (TC) after buying The Mirror Conspiracy mostly on a whim. I wasn’t a big fan at first, but the disc has really grown on me. I really like TC’s laid back beats and worldbeat overtones. Sorta acid-jazz meets disco meets trip-hop, but the tone of the disc is so consistant that I hardly notice the passage of each individual track. Moving now to Abductions and Reconstructions though… I REALLY dig the tracks, but as the Pitchfork review notes, the whole disc is just a little too much of the same thing. The same beats, the same percussion, the same speed… Taken in pieces I like the album almost as much as Mirror Conspiracy, yet it gets old. Still, it’s worth listening to if you like TC’s brand of laid back mixes. This is definitely chill music.

It is worth noting the TC mixes a rather bizaare spectrum of artists on the disc… Including alt rock’s David Byrne and senegalese singer Baaba Maal.

Favorite tracks: Dance On Vaseline, I Will Follow You (Souka Nayo), Tickertape Of The Unconscious, Pizzicato 5
