Blast from the past

I’ve just imported about a hundred posts from December 2000 through May 2003. The posts are kind of a mess, since during this time I used four different blogging systems (hand coding, Blogger, Movable Type, Blosxom). As a result, my RSS feeds may be a bit messy as I update and reformat these older posts. As I go, I’ll add the interesting things (I doubt there are many) I find.

First Post! — Not really, but definitely the earliest I can find
My first Blogger post — The entries previous to this were from a hand-coded “weblog” I had
My first review — My reviews used to be much more in-depth (and better written)
I move my whole site to blogger — Previously the frontpage was still hand-coded
After a four month break, I post from NC for the first time
Switching to Movable Type — I’m not actually sure when I was using Blosxom (and when I left Blogger)
The grad school application begins
I get all political for a change — This was actually just the first of several political posts (something I haven’t done much of since)
The great ice storm of 2002
I abandon Movable Type, move to Blosxom and start all over — And here I am putting everything back where it should be

Welcome to my all-new, all-not-broken website! I’m currently using Dreamhost until it’s decided what will become of the venerable zeppox.ath.cx. Needless to say, some site bits might not be working quite right for a little while.

Update: Now’s as good as time as any to say goodbye to my old http://zeppox.ath.cx/~jackson/ URL — So if you have that page bookmarked, make sure to update to http://zeppox.net. The old URL should work again some day, but I can’t guarantee when that will be.

New site bits and bobs

You can always tell when class deadlines are approaching… I start making tons of little updates to the site.

changelog notebook – An experimental blog relating to my geekier interests. I have some doubts about the wisdom of multiple blogs, but I’m going to try it this way for a while.
movie reviews – Updated with the new look, and with a better layout.
reading list – Also updated with the new look and now driven by WordPress (like the movie page). I still need to copy over the old list to the new one.
I fixed a bug that kept Internet Explorer from viewing the site due to a bad content-type header.
I’ve updated the URLs to be http://zeppox.net instead of http://jackson.zeppox.net. The old ones (all of them) will still go to the right places.

Well, I’ve been increasingly frustrated with anything and everything I’ve posted on this site. As a result, I’ve decided to close down this blog, and start a new one. These archives will stay where they are for the forseeable future.

MT problems

It seems that MT screws up lists… I hadn’t realised that MT is quite so enthusiastic about line breaks. I had imagined that is converted skipped lines to paragraphs, but hadn’t realised it inserted so many hard breaks. This made lists look really funny. To fix, I’m simply writing lists out all on one line. Ugly as hell in HTML, but looks right when rendered.

My misson (since I’ve chosen to accept it) is to take the next step in infogeekdom: integrating my weblog with a Wiki.

The scheme is simple. Following in Steven Frank’s footsteps, I shall install WikiTikiTavi and use Les Orchard’s MTWikiFormat MT plugin.

One last thought:

Why should all this have to be seperate? It seems to me that the aims of Wikis and ‘Blogs are hardly at odds. A weblog tool with Wiki like syntax would be a blast. Make linking shit even easier I say!

Afterwards, I’ll have to work on linking from the Wiki to the blog… Maybe an embedded MT-Search query or something?
