A Survey of Electronic Note-Taking Behavior in Information and Library Science Student :

A survey of graduate students in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was conducted to evaluate the adoption of digital technology for note-taking in classrooms. Previous work has demonstrated that note-taking is an effective tool for information processing. Furthermore, digital tools could increase the utility of notes by allowing students to better organize information, retrieve information, and integrate external information sources. Results of the survey indicate that while students recognize digital notes as possessing positive attributes, adoption of digital note-taking is hampered by immature software and hardware tools.

Not exactly a work of stunning insight, but it’s done! I will say it’s a topic I would like to continue investigating if I go back for my PhD.

As I mentioned in my big tv post we’ve been watching Farscape from beginning to end (thanks to NetFlix). Well, after one lsat Farscape marathon last night (about 4.5 hours of TV) we’re finished with the series and the follow-up mini-series.

Overall I thought the series was pretty decent sci-fi. It took a little while to get used to the muppets and the Australian accents (actually, I really wish they had included subtitles on the DVDs — too many of the actors mumbled their lines), but by the end of season one those things aren’t so noticeable anymore.

What I liked

I thought the main characters were fairly well done, and most of them actually demonstrated some growth over the length of the series. The ones who didn’t tended to only last a season or so. My least favorite tended to be D’Argo — to me he felt like a prissy Klingon with tentacles. The universe felt very Star Wars-esque but they did a decent job keeping things interesting and not falling into creature-of-the-week mode. Finally, I liked that they attempted to maintain continuity throughout the series — Crichton and friends earned a reputation that began to proceed them.

What I didn’t like

I know writers sometimes have to drop storylines for various reasons, but there seemed to be a lot of orphan plotlines in Farscape (Why do some people melt in wormholes and others don’t?). there were also quite a few anoying glitches over the run of the series (How did Stark get his mask back? What exactly do wormhole weapons do? How could the Scarrans find Earth?). Mostly I hated the music. I always muted the DVD menus because it gave me a headache.

TV Torrents is gone for good. This is very sad. I’ve been addicted to TV Torrents for quite some time now. There are alternatives of course, but the loss is still meaningful.

Since discovering TV Torrents (I think I was looking for old episodes of Enterprise?) it has been the way we watch TV (well, we also have the Simpsons and Futurama on DVD). I could use RSS to download shows when they were available, we could watch them when we wanted, the shows didn’t have any ads, and we didn’t have to put up lousy reception. If we missed a show it was always available, we didn’t have to wait for reruns or the DVD set. All of a sudden we were watching more TV than ever. I guess Tivo can do many of the same things, but I don’t want to pay the monthly fee (I pay enough of those already).

Well, maybe this is good. Maybe now we won’t watch so much TV. Or maybe I’ll build a MythTV box.
